So as a Dad I had one of those conversations that you know that you will have to have at some point but you are just never ready for it. 

Let me set the scene, Ariel and I are in the car on the way back from Girl Scouts and we got on the subject of names.  I informed her that up until now I was going to be the last Bruce, and of course now that is not the case.  I tell her though I have never given much thought to names when she informs me that she will always be a Bruce.  I of course say “one day when you get married you will change your name.”  I go on to explain how Alissa’s name has changed and that she might want to hyphenate it, so on and so forth.

Here is the part that I wasn’t prepared for.

She tells me that she knows what her name is going to be when she gets married now.  Curious I of course ask “Really what will that be?” and she announces that she will be Ariel Sampson because she is going to marry Thomas, one of the boys in her class.  She then starts to ask more questions.

1. Can I be Ariel Sampson Bruce, to which I reply “no but you can be Ariel Bruce-Sampson”
2. Can I be Ariel B. Sampson, to which I reply “maybe just Ariel Sampson”

So she is going to marry Thomas tomorrow at school.  I asked if he knows this and she tells me that he has already asked and she keeps saying no, but she has decided now is the time.  I think I have convinced her at this point to wait until after college, but who knows.  If anyone happens to see Ariel in a wedding outfit….will you please tell her to call her father.

Alissa and I had our first birthday party and at this point I think it was a great success.  We did all the usual birthday stuff played had some magic and balloons and consumed large amounts of food.  If you want you can check out the photos.  Tomorrow we continue the torture by taking her up to Disneyland and having a day up there.  Wish us luck!!
